Northumberland County looks after the historical archives for Cobourg.  They are currently located at the Cobourg Public Library at 200 Ontario Street (corner of Albert Street and Ontario Street).

They have a good collection of material and have two staff:

They offer:

• Research support
• Access to artefacts and documents representing lives from all over Northumberland County - historical and contemporary - including municipal records, family and genealogical records, property records, photos, maps, and other items
• Programming-in-class 'Intro to Primary Sources' for young primaries, as well as a comprehensive lesson package for Grade 3 entitled 'Life in the 1800's in Northumberland County'
• Engaging tours to small groups, which can be customized by interest.

You can research Cobourg History but genealogical research is best done at the Cobourg Library (same building – more on the Library here).

The archives will work with educators and offers personalized educational programs targeted towards the specific needs of students.

A new building is planned (currently under construction) when the services will be expanded to include:

• Enhanced community programming for all age levels, including specialized programming for the residents of the Golden Plough Lodge
• A permanent display about the history of Northumberland County
• Changing exhibits about content important to Northumberland residents, developed in collaboration with community groups
• An expanded reading room for public research
• A forum for community groups to showcase the stories they wish to tell.

Regular hours (September to May): Tuesday and Wednesday 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Summer hours (June to August): Monday to Thursday 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Closures: The Archives and Museum is closed on all statutory holidays.
